The first Asian-American elected to state office from Upstate New York.
Adopted by a single mom from an orphanage in Kolkata ("Calcutta"), India, Jeremy made history as the first Asian-American elected to state office from Upstate New York — and is the first Rochester City Schools graduate in the State Senate in decades.
Born in India, but raised in Rochester's South Wedge neighborhood, Jeremy attended city schools, earned scholarships to college and law school, and has worked in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. He was elected to the state senate in 2020, now proudly representing his hometown.
As the son of a union teacher, education has always been a priority. He graduated from Rochester's School of the Arts as a vocal music major, earning his B.A. with honors from Hobart & William Smith Colleges — where he served as student body president — and received his J.D. from Albany Law School, where he was class president and a member of the editorial board for the Albany Law Review.
Jeremy's public service began in the early 2000's when he worked for late U.S. Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, whose constituent-service ethic shaped his entire career. He has worked for two New York Governors and served as the chief of staff for Rochester City Hall.

Since taking office, Jeremy secured tax cuts for middle-class New Yorkers, delivered record funding for public schools, and helped author the New York CHIPS Act — creating an economic development program that brought Micron and other semiconductor companies, and thousands of jobs, to Upstate New York. He is the chair of the Senate's Transportation Committee, where he leads infrastructure and mobility policy across New York State.
Jeremy is married to Dr. Diane, a surgeon with the University of Rochester Medical Center. Together they reside in the City of Rochester and are soon expecting their first child.
